Want to straighten your smile… Invisalign may be what you are looking for.
There are two ways to straighten your teeth.
- Traditional Metal Braces – This method is where an orthodontist cements metal brackets to your teeth. A wire is then threaded between the brackets. This wire is bent, shaped and tightened frequently to achieve the desired results. The braces may cause irritation and sores in your mouth. Hard or sticky foods may damage the braces and should be avoided. Once treatment is completed, a retainer may need to be worn.
- Invisalign – This is a series of clear, removal appliances called aligners. First an impression, x-rays and photos are taken. The impression is then put through a CT-Scan and a 3-D model is created on the computer. Using custom software the dentist can simulate the movement of the teeth from the start of treatment to completion. The dentist then reviews the simulation and approves or modifies the treatment. Once the treatment is approved, the aligners are manufactured and sent to the dentist. You may need to have attachments added for retention and/or reproximation. Attachments are tooth colored and made of a glass like substance which are bonded to the teeth. Reproximation is when the teeth are adjusted interproximally to allow for a better fit. Once the treatment is complete, a retainer is fabricated.
Traditional metal braces and Invisalign can produce the same great result. At our office we recommend the Invisalign for esthetic and hygienic reasons. The Invisalign aligners are transparent making it difficult to see them and are more comfortable then metal braces. Invisalign reduces the risk of plaque buildup due to the fact that the aligners can be removed making it easier to properly brush and floss your teeth. They are also removed when eating and drinking so there is no worry of food being collected between the braces. Finally, Invisalign reduces the risk of mouth sores caused by irritation of traditional metal braces.
